ADDITIONAL SHOW IN BUENOS AIRES

Argentina, we have some great news for you: After our confirmation for the Masters Of Rock festival in Buenos Aires there was such a huge demand for a full length…

LISTEN TO "THE WICKED RULE THE NIGHT"

After almost three years of hard work, mastermind Tobias Sammet and his outstanding all-star formation inspire us with an epic full-throttle track, in which the master himself as well as his duet partner Ralf Scheepers present themselves in an absolute world-class vocal form. The song, which gives a first impression of the ninth AVANTASIA album “A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society” to be released in autumn, comes with a lavishly animated lyric video, for which Costin Chioreanu is responsible.

The Flying Opera - Today 13 years ago it came out and went to Number 1. It's a great document of our Scarecrow world tour in 2008. Avantasia had been known as a studio thing and nobody thought we could ever turn it into a live extravaganca, let alone tour the whole planet with it. In 2008 it became a live band. Playing to hundreds of thousands on 3 continents in 3 weeks. Well, live "band"? Or orchestra? Live "spectacular"? I mean, we're not the Rolling Stones, and we're not circe de soleil either, we're not West Side Story and certainly not Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. What would YOU call Avantasia? In any case, rest assured if summer festivals had a roof, this summer we'd blow the f****n roof off! We're ready like never before!Let's talk about it, tonight 9 PM on RadioBob - Tobias Sammet Rockshow ... See MoreSee Less

20 years ago this week, Hellfire Club was released. It was a very important album and retrospectively I think it was one of the finest pure Power Metal albums I've ever been involved in. Songwriting-wise as far as my contribution goes it was the natural continuation of the Metal Opera in a way. After that, Edguy and Avantasia broke the chains of Power Metal to let other influences shine through as well. After all, within the Power Metal realms we felt like we had done everything, and even though in every Power Metal purist's fantasy we should have done another Hellfire Club or Metal Opera after that, I knew that within that box there wouldn't have been room to do "the same, just different, and as good please". It had been done, the same but better was pointless, the only way to move on was progress. Songs like Piper Never Dies were a better version of The Pharaoh already, and in hindsight lighthearted stuff like Lavatory Love Machine or King Of Fools were rooted in the fact that after the first two Avantasia albums and the rather sinister Mandrake album I needed an outlet for my tongue-in-cheek stuff, that jester in me needed to offend purists with some screw-the-rules hedonism. It was a liberating feeling. And after all, unlike on the Metal Opera, I was allowed to sing all songs myself again and prove to myself that I can sing, too. 😜Still love that album. Would I do the album like that today? No. Do I still love it for what it is? Absolutely! I believe that era gave birth to some "European Power Metal" of a quality that I haven't heard very often in the past twenty years, yet I can relate much more to later albums that were closer to my musical roots and not as one-dimensional.Funny side note, there is a track on the EP called "Life and Times of a Bonus Track". The record deal said we need bonus tracks, every label wanted bonus tracks for this and that territory, for an EP, a limited edition and what have you... "a gift for the fans, maybe outtakes or something not strong enough for the album". Houston, we have a problem! What's the point of giving someone a gift not good enough for serious business? It's like making people pay for their own crappy secret Santa surprise... Of course, as a band you can't revolt against certain givens in the music industry, but I thought: you wanna be fooled, you will be. So I wrote down a few lines in the studio within minutes, and I asked our engineer Mikko Karmila at Finnvox studio in Helsinki to mic their zillion-Euros-Steinway grand piano and put a vocal mic in place too. It was blasphemic. I said: "just push the record button, I don't know what's gonna happen". I didn't have an idea what I was gonna play, let alone a structured composition, and you can hear that. I just sang my little poem and played some spontaneous nonsense along, right off the bat. A lousy first-take and five minutes later we had a bonus track, composed and recorded simultaneously. Ok, it resembled a poor attempt at writing a piss-take sequel to "Imagine" of John Lennon, but the record label was happy. Perfect for Edguy, we were different and we enjoyed our freedom of fools. The song ended up on the King Fools single which would become the highest charting single of Nuclear Blast since Manowar's Warriors of the world. Good times, long ago, but cherished and edged on my memory. ... See MoreSee Less

Going through material for the big “Scarecrow“ box (no release date yet) and here’s a picture of Sascha and me working on demos back in the day (nice shirt, eh?). After all, I learned that he wasn’t just a great producer but probably the best musician I had ever worked with, and fortunately despite his world class skills - he didn’t have an ego at all. Too good to be true for my ego! ;-P And even though with his beard he looks a bit like Charles Manson here, he is probably the person I know that is closest to what I imagine Jesus Christ to have been like... Except the magic tricks and stuff...Honestly, we worked days and weeks and months and created so much stuff, it was quite remarkable and exciting to get such a boost for my creative work. Can’t wait to hit the road with Sascha again in June, meanwhile - if you wanna check out Sascha's musical roots - his band (that features half of Avantasia’s band) are gonna play a charity festival where they’ll also play a lot of his early Heavens Gate stuff in Braunschweig on May 10th.As for the Scarecrow rerelease - we'll keep you posted, but it's gonna be massive! 🙂Have a lovely weekend everyone and don’t let the space batteries hit you on the head! You may end up speaking languages you’ve never learned to understand…T ... See MoreSee Less

Writing at a London Street Cafe... The UK has always been a magical inspiring place for me. Robin Hood, John Cleese, Iron Maiden, the hound of the Baskervilles, Harry Kane... How can you not like Ol' England?! Here I went out for a coffee with my friend Kevin Nixon who took the picture a couple of moons ago. He's a ManUtd supporter, so sorry for him! ;-P Unfortunately we won't play the UK this year, but I promise you, at some point we'll be back. But if you fancy travelling, you can come over to continental Europe, we'll play some great shows this summer!
